چکیده

Two properties of optical transmissions, namely, unidirectional propagation and predictable propagation delay, make it possible to pipeline packet transmissions in alloptical networks. In this paper, we study the problem of scheduling All-to-All Personalized Communication (AAPC) in unidirectional TDM/WDM rings with pipelined transmissions, which can achieve a much higher bandwidth utilization than non-pipelined transmissions. For a given number of wavelengths, K, and number of transmitter-receiver pairs per node, T , the theoretical lower bound (TLB) on the schedule lengths is derived, and scheduling methods which can achieve near optimal results are proposed for three different cases, namely, T = K, 2 T < K and T = 1, respectively.

Packet Scheduling in WDM Ring Networks with Non-uniform Traffic Demands and Arbitrary Transceiver Tuning Latencies

This paper considers the scheduling problem of packet transmissions in a TDM/WDM unidirectional optical ring network. Our objective is to design a scheduling scheme for packet transmission with minimum scheduling length satisfying a set of traffic requirements. We focus on a fairly general case in that non-uniform traffic demands and arbitrary transmitter tuning latencies are allowed. Since the...

Pipelined Versus Non-pipelined Tra c Scheduling in Unidirectional WDM Rings?

Two tra c scheduling schemes, namely, non-pipelined and pipelined scheduling, are considered for uniform tra c in unidirectional WDM rings. Their performances in terms of schedule length and throughput are compared. Optimal or near optimal schedules are obtained for a given number of wavelengths, and a given number of transceivers per node as well as their tuning time.

Optimization of long-reach TDM/WDM passive optical networks

Long-Reach Passive Optical Network (LR-PON) using hybrid TDM/WDM techniques is one of the candidates for the future optical access that can solve the expected increase in terms of traffic demand and area coverage. One of its advantages is the possibility to share the capacity of any wavelength among more than one user, through TDM/WDM hybrid multiplexing. However, it is still an open issue whic...

Interconnected WDM Ring Networks: Strategies for Interconnection and Traffic Grooming*

In telecommunication networks, SONET self -healing rings are widely deployed as transport infrastructure. Typically, multiple rings are interconnected together to provide a large geographical coverage. A typical network-planning problem of traffic grooming deals with packing several TDM sub-channels into high-speed wavelength channels in a WDM ring with the goal of saving SONET equipment usage....

A novel survivable architecture for hybrid WDM/TDM passive optical networks

A novel tree–ring survivable architecture, which consists of an organization of a wavelength-divisionmultiplexing (WDM) tree from optical line terminal (OLT) to remote nodes (RNs) and a time division multiplexing (TDM) ring in each RN, is proposed for hybrid WDM/TDM passive optical networks. By utilizing the cyclic property of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) and the single-ring topology among...
